Family Home Evening (FHE); a special time set aside for families to learn and review gospel principles, have a short activity, and share a treat.
Lets be honest; I have good intentions, but often fall short. It’s the same story with FHE. I know it’s important, yet there have been more times than I’d like to admit where we’re just hanging out as a family and we count that as FHE. No plan, no direction, no prepared message. Don’t get me wrong, hanging out as a family is great and important, but FHE is meant to be more than hanging out. We have other opportunities throughout the week to just hang out. FHE is a designated time to gain and maintain testimonies as a family.
Last year I committed to do better. A few things that helped me were an outline and set time. The outline ended up being a guide and not an absolute. The set time was an absolute. Every Monday at 7pm we now have FHE. In efforts to help others out there who struggled like me, I’d like to share this outline with you. Feel free to change it up to fit your family’s needs. THIS OUTLINE IS JUST A SUGGESTION. If you have something that works great for your family, keep it up! This isn’t meant to complicate your life, but add some direction. If it doesn’t fulfill that purpose, don’t use it.
Article of Faith & Scripture Mastery: We work on one a month.
Week 1: Gospel Principle- Choose whatever you’d like your family to learn about and discuss.
Week 2: Bible-ites- A great book of Bible stories and short activities. I bought this at Deseret Book.
Week 3: M.M. is for Mormon Message & Game Night. Each month a different person is in charge of game night.
Week 4: Church magazine- The kids rotate and are in charge of the lesson this week. They can use New Era, Friend, or other materials.
If you’d like to follow this outline, go to the link below to download a version of your own. I have provided a general outline, but please feel free to edit it for whatever is best for your family.
